Kiwi Satsuma Green Smoothie
This Kiwi Satsuma Green Smoothie is the perfect winter smoothie! Using the bright, tropical flavors of kiwis and satsuma, it will brighten up any dark winter morning.
Do you know the difference between satsumas, clementines, mandarins and tangerines? I had to google it. It doesn’t help that they often aren’t labeled correctly at the store, if at all. It seems that many people don’t really know the difference, but what it boils down to is: Mandarins and tangerines are the same, it’s just that in the U.S. we call them tangerines and much of the rest of the world they are called mandarins. Clementines and satsumas are varieties of the mandarin. Clementines are a little more tart, satsumas are a little more sweet. Some also say that the satsuma has a looser peel. I’ve been seeing what I have decided are satsumas in the grocery store, all beautiful with their green stems attached, and I just can’t resist them. I was planning on making this smoothie for about a month, but I swear, people keep eating my satsumas before I have a chance to (side eye, Mr. Briar).
I wanted to give my green smoothie a winter twist.
Anyway, this is very similar to my Tropical Green Smoothie, which is honestly the smoothie that I drink at least 3 days a week. But I wanted to change it up and do something with a winter twist. Since the satsuma (or tangerine or mandarin or clementine) season is really the winter, it is perfect for this. And what other tropical fruit is in season in the winter months? One of my favorites, the kiwi. I have been a huge fan of kiwis since I was a kid. I love the uniqueness of it, the texture and flavor are like nothing else.
As I have mentioned before, I really recommend freezing some or all of your fruit before making your smoothie.
It will really make the smoothie texture so much better, not to mention the taste. Nothing worse than a warm smoothie, trust me. For this I peeled the satsuma and separated it into wedges, then I peeled and sliced the kiwi. I only left them in the freezer for a little over an hour, so it doesn’t take that long, although over night would be great too. The first time I made this I only used water as the liquid and I found it to be a little tart and acidic. The next time I added coconut water and it was perfect. Coconut milk (the beverage, not the culinary kind that comes in a can), would probably also be great. Add some banana, spinach and greek yogurt, and you have a vitamin packed green smoothie that tastes like pure sunshine. Not a bad way to start a winter morning.

- 2 kiwis
- 2 satsumas or clementines
